my impression is that non-extremist muslims are the first to be victims of the extremists, when they speak out. i saw that in egypt; i saw and read about it throughout the maghreb. and all you need to understand the violence there is to contemplate what happened in algeria when fis got into a fight with the fln govt; hundreds of thousands of people died. the arab spring being fought out in syria bears the same marks.
on top of this, the moderate muslims get the blame for the acts of the extremists.
ogugua, i can't speak for the situation in nigeria, but these other places i do know a bit about. think about east africa now and you'll see the same thing

Should it matter whether or not this report is true? I do not know. Without any intention to trivialize what if true, must be recognized as a significant development, I sometimes think that more true Muslims should be more constructively concerned  about and engaged in stopping the enduring, very pricy damage that extremists in their midst, are doing to their set of religious belief that those who seem to know, describe as a well-meaning religious belief set. Many true believers it seems to me mostly choose acquiescence as their convenient, effective, preferred, and timely response to the continued exploitative corrosion of the theory and practice of their faith by extremist economic, political, and social  adventurers and opportunists. We are reminded again that when self-regulation fails, external regulation may happen.
