"I use the term "opportune" instead of "inopportune" because what the legislation has going for it is the backing of the traditional/ conservative, religious and cultural forces in modern Nigeria and their views about the function of the gnash or the function of the orgasm<https://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=navclient&hl=en-GB&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4NDKB_enSE548SE548&q=REich+%3A+The+function+of+the+orgasm> - or the function of love between human beings, the role of the family - and you must admit, whether you like it or not, that they are in the majority and that they are the people - people of mosque and church who are going to vote in the North, the South, the West and the East – and should this legislation become an election issue in 2015, many of them will be voting for or against the anti-gay Law . A shrewd political move indeed. Jonathan and his supporters have also knocked out a formidable 'northern'
political opponent, with the stroke of the pen. The opponent now has to stay hidden in the closet
and may even have to quit public life. This is an opportunistic masterstroke.

Subject: USA Africa Dialogue Series - It's a must watch: BBC World Have Your Say: Nigeria Anti-Gay Law

RE – Nigeria anti-gay law<https://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=navclient&aq=hts&oq=&hl=en-GB&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4NDKB_enSE548SE548&q=Nigeria+anti-gay+law>

I watched the matter being hotly debated on the BBC: World have your say: Nigeria anti-gay law <https://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=navclient&aq=hts&oq=&hl=en-GB&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4NDKB_enSE548SE548&q=BBC%3A+World+have+your+say+%3A+Nigeria+anti-gay+law#hl=en-GB&q=BBC:+World+have+your+say+:+Nigeria+anti-gay+law&tbm=vid> programme in which the justifications for the government's legislation was very ably represented.

If we could say with any certainty that he is keen on being elected president of Nigeria in 2015, then we could safely say that it would seem that this law comes into effect at an opportune time, just at the start of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan's re-election campaign. I use the term "opportune" instead of "inopportune" because what the legislation has going for it is the backing of the traditional/ conservative, religious and cultural forces in modern Nigeria and their views about the function of the gnash or the function of the orgasm<https://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=navclient&hl=en-GB&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4NDKB_enSE548SE548&q=REich+%3A+The+function+of+the+orgasm> - or the function of love between human beings, the role of the family - and you must admit, whether you like it or not, that they are in the majority and that they are the people - people of mosque and church who are going to vote in the North, the South, the West and the East – and should this legislation become an election issue in 2015, many of them will be voting for or against the anti-gay Law . The question is, which presidential candidate or political party can run on a policy that legalizes same-sex marriage in Nigeria and hope to win an election?

Those opposed to the legislation shouting " Human Rights" are certainly in the minority, even a very vociferous minority, including the clamour of voices from practicing Nigerian gay communities in Nigeria and in the Diaspora, where they are can live and let live, legally.

The pressure from "overseas" can be immense, but to what extent does such pressure impact on the masses of Nigerian voters to change the popular direction of the anti-gay current ? That is the question.

It should be an interesting debate right up to Election Day and beyond not merely about " tolerance" but going beyond tolerance to acceptance <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NvLieJFjh8>

Because the outcome of the debate is determined by factors that are so culture-dependent, it's different from the kinds of debate that have taken place over here in Sweden for example - where many of my friends are – gay. Who are you to want to recreate my friends in your own image?

That too was just a question.

Sincerely,

We Sweden<http://www.thelocal.se/blogs/corneliushamelberg/>
