Enjoy free online access to African language articles and their translations

Dear Pablo Idahosa,

The first two papers to be published by a mainstream journal in an African language are now freely available online! They are in the current issue of Journal of African Cultural Studies.

'Rũrĩmĩ na karamu: ithoga harĩ athamaki a Abirikais an article by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, written and published in Gĩkũyũ. The English language translation, Tongue and pen: a challenge to philosophers from Africa, is in a separate article. The paper argues that African languages have the flexibility to express philosophical ideas, and illustrates this powerfully by being written in Gĩkũyũ.

Karin Barber's piece, 'Yorùbá nílé àti ní ìlú òkèèrè', or 'Yoruba at home and abroad', reflects on the meanings of speaking Yorùbá at home and abroad, and describes for the reader the many ways in which home and abroad inform one another. Barber's paper argues that the Yorùbá language is widely inscribed on and in the streets of Birmingham and London as well as those in Lagos.
