you really should see it; kelani is very good; there are some portions where two young men, sons of important fathers, return "spoiled" by america. they are hilarious!
further, this is a film that crosses between nigeria and benin, specifically lagos and cotonou. it really crosses the bridge, with french used on the one side, and english on the other--with yoruba on both sides. it is an ingenious romeo & juliet adaptation, in many ways. i think it is one of kelani's more successful films, and i recommend it to anyone on the list who has not yet had the happy chance to see it.

Ken:Many ethnic groups in Nigeria - and I would say elsewhere in the world - refer in a derogatory manner by NAME to WHOLE ETHNIC groups, with a negative STEREOTYPE at the back of their minds. My ethnic group the Yoruba is particularly guilty of this, particularly of closest-neighbor groups (of which the Egun are one) and EVEN sub-groups among the Yoruba refer to other sub-groups episodically in a derogatory manner. For example, I am Ekiti (-Yoruba), and some other Yoruba closer to the coast (eg Lagosians) call us "ara oke" (people from Up-country, roughly translated as "hicks") even though some of us are more sophisticated themselves! :-)If we were to open up what each group in Nigeria called each other - or regarded each other - that would be opening up a pandora's box and a can of worms."Nuff said.....just enjoy your Abeni Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4 (I have a Black American friend who cannot have enough of the Abeni (A-B-E-N-A-I) series, although I have not watched a SINGLE SECOND of them)And there you have it.Bolaji Aluko--On Sat, Mar 15, 2014 at 2:31 PM, kenneth harrow <harrow@msu.edu> wrote:in kelani's Abeni (which i just taught), chief bello is putting down akanni, and he calls him an "egun" man.
