Sheela na Gig-British church architectural figure of the splayed open pudenda, as visualised by Theodora Rebecca Wildroft
as Odu
continually birthing the 256 omo odu, children of Odu, semantic forms that define the dynamism of the cosmos in Ifa cosmology
with much hair on her private parts
She with a vagina that suffocates like dry yam in the throat
Alagba lugbu omi
The mighty body of water
the pot that rolls on and on without breaking
vibrations from the deep….
Slightly Adapted from The Gelede Spectacle by Babatunde Lawal.
At the centre of the opon ifa,a central cosmological and divinatory form of the Ifa system of knowledge, spiritual development and divination that originates in Yorubland, shares affinities with other systems such as Afa in Igboland, Fa in Dahomey, and Oguega in Benin, is at times shown two intersecting horizontal and vertical lines.
May these lines have any relationship to the erotic intertwining of man and woman?
Hindu, Buddhist and Western Magical Tantra have developed sophisticated cosmologies and ritual systems in relation to this intertwining, thereby creating great contributions to the understanding of the philosophical and spiritual significance of human sexuality.
Is such a development possible or even of value in Ifa?
The Ifa and Erotica Facebook group explores this zone, existent in Ifa philosophy, verbal and visual art but deemphasised in particular contexts, particularly the Nigerian context and those cultural contexts inspired by it.
All are welcome to participate in the development of this relatively new field of knowledge.
