VC Aluko:

Thank you very much for taking time out of your busy schedule to provide such an eloquent clarification of the "naked Lecturer" and, also, for drawing our attention to another unfortunate situation at ABU, a seasoned educational institution. And you are 100% correct that such unfortunate situations must be reported publicly as a way of either stamping out or clamping down on the immoral cankerworm. I forwarded the first story about the Lecturer to an African sister, who was simply worried that by reporting the incident, we were washing our dirty linen in public, and I was surprised by her reaction. In response, I asked her if she wanted her daughter to be so treated by an unscrupulous Lecturer, and she has not responded. However, her reaction reminded me of a couple of black sisters, who blamed Ms. Monica Lewinsky for making a public spectacle of her situation with then President Bill Clinton: " I won't embarrass myself and my parents like that," some of them said, also to my astonishment.

The two occurrences you have wisely shared with us reminded me of a similar immoral act of a male faculty colleague in Louisiana: Charles was about 58 years old, and a full Professor. He promised a young woman in his class a better grade (or marks) than what she was to earn on her own, if she "gave in" to his sexual advances. After the 27-year old female graduate (or postgraduate) student agreed to his advances, she had reported Charles' conduct to the campus' Chancellor, whose security apparatus was ready to use a hidden camera to videotape the would-be romantic scene.

When my colleague (Charles) arrived at the young woman's one-bedroom apartment (as we saw from the played recorded video tape), he threw his grades (or marks) book on her couch, saying:"Jane, that is the final grades book. Just make me happy, and write in any final grade you want." Everything was recorded! Sadly, the young woman faked "feminine illness" and, as a result, did not go through with the "final act". Yet, the fact that Charles brought his grades book to the place and also made all those compromising comments, he was severely punished: Charles was reduced from a rank of full Professor to Associate Professor; also, he was removed as the Interim Chairman of the Social Sciences Department. The saddest spectacle was the presence of his beautiful wife at the Faculty Disciplinary Committee hearing attended by many of us.

"Charles, what love have I not given you in our marriage?" the wife asked Charles in tears.

"Honey, it was sheer temptation. I was tempted by her youthfulness," he said sheepishly.

I left the Louisiana-based university about 20 years ago but, a couple of years ago, I encountered Charles again at an NEH Summer Institute for faculty and independent scholars in Maryland; we were both faculty fellows at the Institute. Even there at the Institute, a young female Assistant Professor from Kentucky complained bitterly that Charles was sexually harassing her at night, basically by going to her hotel room door late at night to knock, and then to whisper: "Hi, let me in to make you happy." Maybe, if Charles had been kicked out of the Louisiana institution, he would have learned some real sense! He was giving a second chance, but Charles never changed!

Nwalimu Akwasi:

Thanks for your thoughts and kind words.....

This naked and mis-shapen fellow should be dismissed outright..  First, this was a DOCUMENTED act, so egregious that it has no redeeming possibility. Secondly, he combined sexual harassment with crass stupidity.  Thirdly, it is UNLIKELY that this was his first "act", so one should include likely "hidden" acts to exceed the "two-strikes-you-are-out" mantra! :-)

In addition to official university sanction, encouraging further civil (psychological damage, lost future income for delayed graduation or grade, etc.) action by the student and criminal (eg for extortion) prosecution by the state may be in order.

In fact, there is a report in today's Vanguard (see below) of  a lecturer at ABU who has just been jailed in Nigeria for two months (too short) for inexorably harassing the wife of another fellow (strangely enough a lecturer in another tertiary institution) who was a student under him.

More news like this should be circulated  to scare the jeebeez/daylight out of both students and staff....

And there you have it.

Alleged Sexual Harassment of pregnant woman: Husband wants Prof's appointment terminated

By Tina Akannam

Dutse—The husband of the pregnant woman, Mrs, Bushira Isyaku, who was  allegedly sexually harassed by Professor Festus David Kolo of Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, Zaria, Malam Muhammad Isyaku, has asked the university to terminate the appointment of the don.

A Chief Magistrate Court in Kiyawa Local Government Area  of Jigawa State sentenced Professor Kolo of the Faculty of Education at Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, Zaria to two months imprisonment last week for knowingly enticing a married woman who was a student in his department contrary to Section 389 of the penal code law.

Principal State Counsel,  Mustapha Adamu, who read the First Information Report, said that on May 21, one Muhammad Ghali of Takur Quarters Dutse "reported you, Prof. Festus David Kolo of ABU, knowing fully well that Mrs Bushra Ghali Muhammed is his wife, and you have been making advances towards her, inciting her, calling her often, sending her love SMS messages using your phone…"

Adamu further said: "You, Prof. Kolo, was caught red handed by the police at Dan Musa Guest House, Room 109 with Ghali's wife after he reported the case to the police and after several warnings and pleas by the husband.''

Malam Isyaku who spoke in an interview with Vanguard yesterday said that the two-month imprisonment for the 66- year professor was too mild.

He argued that since the court had found him guilty of committing the offence and sentenced him,  he should face dismissal from the university because of the integrity of the institution.

Isyaku who is a lecturer with the Jigawa State Polytechnic, stressed that dismissing Prof Kolo from the services of ABU would serve as a deterrent to others who had formed the habit of seeking to have a canal knowledge of their females students.

'Though the two months sentence given to the convict by the Kiyawa Chief Magistrate Court was less severe, but at least it has sent a signal to lecturers who involve themselves in such dirty behaviour that no body is above the law," he said.

He further said that he spoke with the Prof Kolo severally on the telephone and even begged him to stop calling his wife's phone, but the he persisted and even visited his wife in Dutse, Jigawa state where he was eventually apprehended by security operatives

''I asked professor Kolo if he knew that Bushira is a married woman, he said yes, and I told him to please keep off from her. He apologised but kept on calling my wife who reported the matter to their class representative who advised her to switch off her telephone,'' he added.

He told Vanguard that his wife got admission in ABU Zaria to do her Masters  in Guidance and Counselling, adding that his first encounter with his wife was when the convict gave them attendance register to write their names and telephone numbers for identification.

According to Isyaku, soon after his wife signed and went for prayers, Prof Kolo started calling her repeatedly.  ''She saw five missed calls from Kolo when she came back from prayers. Kolo persisted calling her number despite several warnings.''

The accused pleaded guilty to the charge. His lawyers M.A. Gausu and R.A. Nwande told the court that the accused wass above 60 years and the bread winner of his family and therefore begged the court to temper justice with mercy.

In his ruling, Senior Magistrate Muhammed Musa Kaugama said that although the convict was a first offender, "this court hereby sentences the convict to two months imprisonment without option of fine,'' to serve as deterrent to others.

Dear VC Aluko:

Thank you very much for your exceptional candor as well as for the democratic governance that is prevailing on the Otuoke campus. You should be applauded for making your faculty and staff aware of what is unacceptable and the subsequent sanctions. That is very important because of my experiences as a long-term member of a Dean's Disciplinary Committee: when accused persons were brought before our committee for infractions, part of their line of defense was that they did not know that the perpetrated act was either illegal or a sanction-attracting offence (or offense). Their only dilemma was mostly that ignorance of an existing law is not a reasonable defense!

Also, since everybody deserves a second chance, your "two strikes and you are out" policy is equally commendable, maybe except in an obviously-egregious situation like what you reported earlier about the alleged depraved and morally-bankrupt quid pro quo conduct of the Delta State University Lecturer. Does his conduct, if proved beyond all reasonable doubt, deserve an "Oga I beg" second chance?

Dear All:

I understand from another source about this story as follows:

QUOTE

In a classic display of low moral standards among some lecturers in Nigeria's higher institutions, Mr Ifeanyi Ugwu Raphael, a lecturer in the department of Theatre Arts, Delta State University, Abraka was at the weekend allegedly caught in one of his female student's room in a sex-for-marks scandal.

Information Nigeria gathered that the 400 level student (name withheld) of Theatre Arts was carrying over Mr Ifeanyi's course 'THA 203' and in a bid to lure her to sleep with him, promised to upgrade her scores.

UNQUOTE

This lecturer should be confronted immediately with these pictures, and dismissed immediately if he cannot give alternative explanation eg armed robbery, extortion,  kidnap, etc.  We must name and shame these bad eggs.

As VC at Otuoke, at my last Senate meeting a fortnight ago, I warned the lecturers of my university again against sexual or other harrassment, and reminded them about the advent of social media and technology, that they knew not who or what was "hiding" on the other side of the wall or communication line when they were "transacting" any illicit business with students or really anybody (including their secretary, etc.) that they had a power relationship over.  At the meeting, to great consternation of the Senate attendees, I told the story of one report (of staff, not academic) that I had already received, and I called the person in about it.  He first strenuously denied it all, but when I confronted him with snippets of all of what he had been doing and saying, and that I understood that there were audio recordings of all the conversations, he knew that the game was up, and immediately knelt down (Nigerians know how to kneel down!) and vowed not to do so again.  Two strikes and you are out is what I told him.

And there you have it...not quite Zero Tolerance yet at Otuoke, but we shall get there soon!  That was just a shot across the bough..

As much as I know that sex-for-grade is (regretably) the norm and prevalent in Nigerian institutions of learning, I do however question the credibility of this posting for the following reasons:

** The language is streetish and has no substance. The author failed to do a good job in his presentation. What do you think? Cheers and peace.

Good one. There was this professor at the University of Ife who wanted sex before he would do anything about my friend's PhD dissertation. The friend was herself a lecturer at the University of Ibadan. You had to see the frustrations the lady went through. Even when she reported this professor to relevant authorities, they did nothing about it. Being a tough woman herself, this friend gave that professor lots of hell.

Kudos to Tega.

WHATS THE MATTER WITH LECTURERS TODAY? (VIEWER DISCRETION) : Exclusive: Delta State University Lecturer Thrown Out Naked After He Tried Molesting A Female Student (Pictures) 18+

Sexy chukkygGuys, the naked man in the picture you see above is supposedly a lecturer in Delta State University, Theatre Arts department.According to my reader who sent me the story, the lecturer had threatened to fail one of his female students Tega if she refused to sleep with him.Initially, Tega had rejected his advances, but when Mr Lecturer's wahala became plenty, then he threatened to fail her, Tega gave in. Well kinda.Cos somehow, she was able to convince her lecturer to let them have the sex at her apartment instead of a hotel room. When Mr Lecturer showed up at Tega's place yesterday (Friday), she let him in. Purposely, she left her doors unlocked and got her lecturer to take off his clothes, ready for action.Unknown to him, Tega had arranged with her male friends and neighbours that they were to barge into her room once she got him completely naked. And fortunately, everything worked according to plan. The rest is history.Sexy chukkydd   exSexy chukkyDo you blame Tega?
