Nyanya: The bomb this time
The report of another bomb blast in Nyanya, near Abuja, is completely disheartening and unacceptable—though not unexpected. Nyanya is an urban sprawl, hard to secure by routine means, a terrorist's dream target where every successful hit guarantees maximum harm and global outrage—to the delight of the attention-seeking terrorists—given its proximity to Abuja.
The bomb blast this time can only deliver up one message to the living: unusual actions are required to protect Nyanya other high density areas around Abuja. Government should consider outlawing private vehicles on the lone over-congested road leading from Nyanya into town. People could be ferried into the city of Abuja on high-powered buses. This will stop terrorists from using car bombs to cause carnage as they have done successfully in the last two weeks.
What about suicide bombers wearing explosive belts? Vigilance and body checks at every bus stop will help. Desperate times, they say, require desperate measures. Israel has used similar actions to minimize car bombing by Islamic terrorists.
