Professor,
My Motor Park Mentality tells me that your statement above is a confirmation that the event was not concluded. Anyway, that "only body empowered to make the announcement" was empowered by the "military boot" and by the laws of that time, was required to take instructions from the "military boot", which was why the announcement could not be continued.
By the way, what is the significant difference between cancelling intra-party elections (primaries), already held and banning the candidates elected without any evidence of wrong doing against them by the "military boot" and cancelling an inter-party election already held by the same "military boot"? We, in Arugo Motor Park Owerri do not see any significant difference.
Yet our so called pro-democracy activists conveniently forgets to bring in the pre-June 12th 1993 undemocratic situations brought about by the "military boot", without which Abiola and Tofa would not have emerged, into discussions on the event of June 12th 1993. The post-June 12th 1993 undemocratic activities of the so called pro-democracy activists is a story for another day.
Even in view of the above, Ayo Obe still wonders: "I suppose that the use of "so-called" is designed to indicate that those who fought for democracy in Nigeria - and are in many cases still fighting - for democracy are charlatans, fakes "bereft" as you say, "of ideals".

In fact, if the election had been CANCELLED prior to its being held, I would not have batted an eyelid, since it would have just gone the way of some of the earlier cancellations. However, to let the election hold, and then to cancel it - to allow the baby to be born, and then kill at on the theater table, was "electoral homicide."Yes: the prolonged REACTION of quite a number of Nigerians both at home and abroad to the cancellation of that election, and the metal-knuckle re-REACTION of the Military (from June 1993 - May 1999) to the People's Uprising - including the separation of the Pro-Democrats from the anti-Pro-Democrats and Pro-Military Civilians - were a watershed in Nigeria's history, our own early Nigerian Spring Uprising. But wait a minute: the Modified Open Ballot System of that June 12, 1993 day: is that not what is increasingly being adopted by INEC even today, that has engendered some more confidence, however little, in our voting process?Let us thank God for little mercies. And there you have it.Bolaji AlukoOn Fri, Jun 14, 2013 at 4:07 PM, Chidi Anthony Opara <chidi...@gmail.com> wrote:That our so called pro-democracy activists would hold up the event of June 12th 1993 in Nigeria as the epitome of democratic practice shows how bereft of democratic ideals they are.

I'm sure you are a secret admirer of what Nigerians achieved on the actual day, June 12th 1993 (I say nothing of the process by which we reached that day) and are just burying your disappointment that we continue to have to look back because there isn't enough going forward from that day to celebrate or emulate. But if it is just a date on the calendar to you, live through it like any other day. After all, it's not as if someone tied your eye to Bola Tinubu or Hafsat Abiola Costello's remarks on the event being commemorated, is it?

Things are such that many wonder if we, having lost this great chance, will ever revisit the fullness of that moment. I pray we do.
