A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr.Fabian Adogwu has said that ethnic, religious and cultural diversities that exist in Nigeria can be harnessed for the good of the society.

Delivering the 2014 Public Lecture entitled "Federalism and National Unity: Optimizing the Richness of Diversity" organized by the Faculty of Law, University of Ibadan, on Friday, 13 June, 2014 the  legal luminary said good governance would breed effective and healthy competition in the country "which promotes economic development, engenders peaceful co-existence and equality of all within the bounds of the law."

Dr. Adogwu stated that different parts of the country are endowed with different mineral and natural resources that form a strong tool for economic development, stressing  that for these diverse resources to be properly harnessed, it requires good governance that understands and utilizes the principles of ideal federalism.

His words: " there is an urgent need for renewal of the ideal practice of federalism in Nigeria. The amount of power that would be given to the federating government will be decided by the federating units. Each states should be allowed to have optimum control of its resources and be allowed to enjoy its benefits, for that will reduce over-dependence on oil in the Niger Delta, and face agriculture mines and industry with which God has blessed Nigeria."

The legal icon contended rather forcefully that each state House of Assembly should control the law of the state in its entirety,  bemoaning  a situation where the federal government declares a state of emergency on an elected state government.

Speaking at the occasion, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Isaac Adewole, stated that many Nigerians are strong advocates of Nigeria's unity.

He, however, warned that our leaders must get it right.

" Nigeria will survive but no country survives religious war. This country has a lot of potentials. Our people are intelligent, dynamic and enterprising. An average Nigerian does not require much. He or she only requires water, light, adequate security and so on. Let us banish poverty and concentrate on wealth distribution."

In her remarks, the chairman of the occasion, Chief Folake Solake, first female Senior Advocate of Nigeria  (SAN)  bemoaned "the daily massacre being experienced with unquantified loss of lives in the country, describing the lecture as a "refreshing oasis in a desert of atrocities."

Prof. Oluyemisi Bamgbose whose tenure as the Dean of the Faculty will end on 31 July, this year, eulogized the Faculty staff, alumni and students for being the pride of the University in their various endeavours.

Dr. Ajogwu later commissioned a 3.5kva inverter system which he donated to the Faculty for use by lecturers in the Faculty's ETF building.

Prof. Adewole also gratefully acknowledged the benefaction of  the donation of  a sum of one million naira to the University by the guest lecturer which the VC promised to match with another one million naira making two million naira to be given to the Faculty to enhance teaching and research.

Present at the occasion were the Dean of Arts, Prof. Remi Raji-Oyelade; in-coming Dean of Law, Prof. Adeniyi Olatunbosun, Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ibadan branch, Barr. Kazeem Gbadamosi; Director, University Advancement Centre, Mr.'Debo Adeosun and the Director of Public Communication, Mr. Olatunji Oladejo.
